Easy, Precise, Versatile, and Fast

Primosplint light-cured composite rods are useful for various applications

By Mark Stueck, CDT

Drake Precision Dental Laboratories has built a reputation based on being a service-oriented business. In the 28-plus years that I have worked here, we have done whatever is necessary to facilitate cases so dentists have the best experience possible. One way we have provided added value to dentists is by fabricating abutment indices; we have been offering this service since before it became popular, and it really gave us an advantage over the competition.

We had been using red materials for our abutment indices, but the color of the material was hiding crucial parts that we needed to see. We realized that we had a great material, Primotec USA’s Primosplint, in the laboratory for hard nightguards, and that this material was clear. We started cutting it down and making short nightguards for abutment indices, and it worked really well. The dentist can place it in a patient’s mouth and see through the material to determine whether the abutment is seated correctly in relation to the adjacent teeth.

We prioritize using the best materials available in order to achieve consistency in the laboratory and provide the dentist with reliable results for the patient. We use Primosplint because it is very easy to handle, very quick to use, and very accurate.

Primosplint is a thixotropic material, meaning the more energy put into it, the softer and more pliable it gets. Because it is a light-cured composite, it has the lowest polymerization shrinkage of any material and the best dimensional stability, which results in a precise passive fit after light-curing. It provides the highest strength without any brittleness, and protects the natural dentition as well as the TMJ, as the material is “abrasion-optimized.”

The product comes in the form of composite rods, so in the laboratory we do not need to mix anything or manage any liquid. It is a putty-type material, and we can break off a piece and form it according to what we need. Once it is light-cured, it comes out hard and ready to go. It is so simple; instead of being a polymer or monomer mix, it is all premixed and offered in an easy-to-use form.

I have been working with Primotec for a long time, and I have come to expect the highest quality from the company’s materials. Primosplint does not disappoint.
